525. Introduction to Numerical Modeling of Lithospheric Deformation in Matlab.

The GSA short course, Introduction to Modeling of Lithosphere Deformation in Matlab, is a one day course designed to introduce geoscientists with a range of specialties to the concepts of numerical simulation, as well as to provide hands-on experience using a modern, research capable numerical code (SiStER – Simple Stokes with Exotic Rheologies).  During this course, we will discuss a range of topics including an introduction to the appropriate equations for different geodynamic problems and numerical methods for solving those equations, the structure of geodynamics codes, how complex rheologies (e.g., non-linear viscosity, elasticity, plasticity) are implemented in simulations, and the practical aspects of running the SiStER code and visualizing results. By the completion of this course, participants will be able to outline the key components, techniques, and assumptions of a complete lithospheric numerical modeling investigation, as well as have a working knowledge of the structure of the SiStER code. Additionally, participants will gain experience running, modifying input files, and visualizing results using the SiStER code.  Finally, several input files with exercises will be supplied to provide a jumping off point for simulating several problems in Earth dynamics including lithosphere extension and faulting, subduction initiation, the critical taper of a subduction wedge, and thermal convection in the mantle.

  • Eric Mittelstaedt, University of Idaho
  • Jean-Arthur Olive, Columbia University
  • John Nabiloff, University of California Davis

This event is being held in conjunction with GSA 2016. Please see the meeting website for registration.

Technical Requirements

Participants should have a functional copy of Matlab on a laptop and have downloaded both versions of the SiStER code from the repository link sent out prior to the course.
