Using CIG's Website

by Sue Kientz last modified 2007-08-07 05:30 AM

A few hints on how to edit and manage information on the CIG website. Includes information on how to grant permission to other people within a working group Work Area.

Browsing

Much of geodynamics.org is open to public browsing; however, there are additional features available to members who log in. Each user is granted a folder, "my folder," at the top right-hand side of the screen just under the search. There you can create documents, store files, and invite other members to review your materials.

In addition, a folder called "Favorites" is automatically generated. Favorites work like browser bookmarks. If you click on this icon (up and to the right) that page will be added to your Favorites.

The printer icon will send the page to the printer and the mail icon allows you to email a link to the page to other people.

Safari users have reported problems accessing this site and/or downloading images. We recommend using another browser.

Editing Pages

To edit pages you need to log in and ensure that as a member of a working group you have been given permission to edit pages. Once you have been granted permission to edit a portion of the website, look for a green bar with tabs. One of those tabs is named "edit." Click on it, make your changes, then "save."

You can edit and add text using plain text, structured text (see the Structured Text Cheatsheet), or HTML. If you are not sure what to use, plain text is recommended. Before you save the page, you will be given the option of designating which type of text you used. The default is structured text.

Adding New Pages, Files, Other Information

To add a new web page, look for "add new item" on the upper right (in the green field) of this box. Choose the kind of content you are adding, e.g., document, image, folder.

Types of Content You Can Add to This Site

  • Document is simply a web page. You can write document content in HTML, plain text, or Structured Text.
  • Event is something to be added to the calendar, such as a meeting, an appointment, or a social event.
  • File is an external document type, such as a word document or a pdf file. You can add just about any type of file to a Plone site. When users navigate to your file object, they will be able to download the document you uploaded.
  • Folder is a place to store other objects. For instance, you might create a folder within your members folder where you keep images.
  • News Item is a special type of document that becomes visible on the "News" tab. This type of object should be used for announcements and things like that.
  • Image can be a .gif, .png, .jpg or .pict file.
  • Link is a link to an item either outside or within Geodynamics.org. If the URL you provide includes "http" the link will display with a small globe in front of it.

Adding Members to a Working Group

Working group members can give other members permission to edit and add materials in the "Work Area" for each working group. For example, the group leader (logged in) for the short-term crustal dynamics working group can go to the Work Area under Working Groups > CIG Short-Term Crustal Dynamics > Work Area.

Then, click on the "sharing" tab in the green bar above the text.

.

Scroll down to "Add sharing permissions for Work Area."

.

Type in the name or email address of the person who is being granted permission to edit those pages. When you find the user, check the box next to the name. Check the box next to the username and click the "Assign Local Role to Selected Users." The user will automatically be assigned the role of "Owner," meaning they will also be able to edit and add material to the work area.
