I'm running the prerelease version of 1.7 and I also get a problem when I try running on more than 1 node in examples/3d/hex8; however, the problem seems to go away when I try a different linear solution option. Try using the attached .cfg file and see if things improve. For your particular problem, I get a different issue when running in parallel (HDF5 error).
