TH13K - A Science Gateway for Mineral and Rock Physics

Monday, 11 December 2023 • 3:00 - 14:00 • 2005 - West (Level 2, West, MC)

Computational studies of mineral properties at extreme conditions of planetary interiors have become essential for interpreting Earth’s seismic structure and providing input for geodynamic modeling. Together, such studies shed light on geophysical and geochemical processes. The full array of physical properties such computations can provide is yet to be unleashed by applying predictive materials simulation methods or by their systematic collection and dissemination.

The U.S National Academy of Sciences Report, “A vision for NSF Earth Sciences 2020-2030: Earth in Time”, identified the need for the “development and maintenance of tools and computational approaches” in Earth sciences. Equally important is the human infrastructure development with the technical expertise to support such advances. So far, such activities have depended on individual PI efforts and awards.  This town hall will collect community feedback on developing a science gateway for mineral physics data and materials computations, a collective effort to advance the foundations of Earth Sciences.
