2014 ASPECT Hackathon

Meeting Summary

The first ASPECT “hackathon” was held May 14-23, 2014 in College Station, TX. The hackathon’s main objective was to jointly work on code and create! A small amount of time was set aside to informal presentations on topics that helped participant’s productivity and that were of general scientific interest.

The ASPECT hackathon brought together 14 participants (13 early career) from the United States, The Netherlands, Germany, and Australia. All had previously used ASPECT and about half had previously contributed code.

During the hackathon, the participants committed some 400 patches to the ASPECT repository. Prior to the hackathon, the number of commits over the entire lifetime of ASPECT  stood at around 2000. These patches increased the number of lines of code in ASPECT from around 45,000 to around 52,000. Most patchsets came with testcases, increasing the number of tests in ASPECT from 53 to 102.

Participants worked on a variety of projects to support their scientific needs which included: nonlinear and direct solvers, radiogenic heating, material models, time dependent temperature boundary conditions. In addition, the group has begun a benchmarking paper to be completed this summer.
