Melt migration in geodynamics simulations using ASPECT

Melt generation and migration are important processes for the evolution of the Earth's interior and impact the global convection of the mantle. While they have been the subject of numerous investigations, the typical time and length-scales of melt transport are vastly different from global mantle convection, which determines where melt is generated. This makes it difficult to study mantle convection and melt migration in a unified framework. Moreover, ... read full article. J. Dannberg and T. Heister

CIG '16

Save the date for the CIG community-wide meeting, Interdisciplinary Directions in Computational Geophysics. The meeting to be held on the campus of UC Davis will have plenary sessions from June 20-22 with tutorials both before and after.  The workshop will focus on ... more info. Registration is now open.

2016 INCITE GWG

The Geodynamo Working Group lead by Jon Aurnou was awarded an additional 150 million core-hours on the IBM Blue Gene/Q "Mira" for their project Frontiers in Planetary and Stellar Magnetism Through High Performance Computing. In 2015, Nick Featherstone worked with ALCF staff to optimize Rayleigh and completed the first  year milestones culminating in high-resolution as well as rotating solar convection simulations. Simulations utilized over 105 million core hours. In 2016, the group will focus on making the first strongly turbulent model of Jovian internal dynamics that realistically simulates coupling between its different systems in anticipation of Juno's arrival in the summer of 2016. project info

Governance

Welcome and congratulations to our 2016 governance committees. Magali Billen and Louis Moresi will be joining Bruce Buffet, David Bercovici, and Omar Ghattas on the Executive Committee; and Katie Cooper, Boris Kaus and Sabine Stanley will be joining Brad Aagaard, Tim Ahern, Jed Brown, David May and Carl Tape on the Science Steering Committee. We thank Scott King, Claire Currie, Jon Aurnou, and Jolante van Wijk for their past service. governance
