Thanks for the reply.
I've attached two images that show the temperature (whole model) and mesh (upper section) corresponding to the end of an updated heat flux vs time plot (also attached).
The model is indeed in a similar initial phase as the model posted in your link, so good to know the heat flux discrepancy levels out eventually.
I'll report back if the model does not transition to the chaotic stage, but I don't think there is any reason to think it will not.

Rather, you get one set of blobs rising at the very beginning and then a long phase where hot material streams up to the surface. The heat flux will then look like in your graph. But it's not a steady state -- it simply moves heat from the bottom into the domain but not out of the top, like in your graph. This takes a long time until the system finally converts to some more chaotic movement. See for example here:
