Ouch -- does the problem really only appear after 20 hours? Could you 
try to see if the same happens if you reduced the mesh size 
significantly (to, say, 1/32nd)?

Also, what is the tool you use to monitor memory consumption? I only 
know of valgrind's massif

but that might be a crude tool for this...
