Scott,

> For the ALA, density should be \rho_{ref} everywhere, except for the buoyancy term.   That’s part of the ALA because the ALA assumes you only keep terms to first order in \mu=\alpha\Delta T.   I know ASPECT had/has the full density in the energy equation, not \rho_{ref}.  I don’t know what you actually use for density in the ALA benchmark problems.

We have implemented various formulations in ASPECT including ALA to
mimic the same setup that is used in benchmarks like this. This was
required to reproduce the results:
