Workshop on Geodynamic Modeling of Tectonic Processes, June 10-12, 2005,
Breckenridge, CO. Sponsors: The National Science Foundation and The
Computational Infrastructure in Geodynamics (CIG). This 2.5 day workshop
will examine the scientific and computational issues that will challenge
geodynamic modeling of tectonic problems in the coming decade. The
workshop will focus primarily on tectonic processes that affect
continental lithosphere over timescales longer than the earthquake
cycle. The goals are to identify problems which the tectonic modeling
community believes should be the focus of research in the coming decade,
identify modeling tools that are available or need to be developed to
address these problems, and to develop a strategy for maximizing
national and international cooperation within the tectonic modeling
community. The workshop will be arranged to include keynote
presentations focusing on science, hardware, and software issues facing
the tectonic modeling community. Breakout sessions will be held between
keynote talks to facilitate discussion and planning. These will be
followed by plenary sessions where breakout group reports will be
presented and discussed. The final product of the workshop will be a
white paper that should serve to provide focus and support for tectonic
modeling research in the coming years. Workshop attendance is limited to
approximately 35 scientists. Participants will be selected to provide
broad representation from the numerical, analog, and mathematical
modeling communities. Keynote speakers will be invited to assure
representation by physical properties specialists and the
computational/information systems communities. The workshop is primarily
designed as a venue for planning U.S. science funding under the auspices
of NSF, but selected international participants will also be invited.
Emphasis will be on understanding continental tectonic processes
(including continental margins), but participation from the marine
science community is encouraged in as much as understanding of basic
processes is common to both oceans and continents. The workshop will be
held at the Great Divide Lodge in Breckenridge, CO, located in the Rocky
Mountains within approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Denver
International Airport. Extended stays (at the participant expense) are
available before and after the workshop. More information about the
workshop and application procedure can be accessed online at
http://geodynamics.org <http://www.cig.org/> (click the ?Events? tab).
Application deadline is May 1, 2005. Limited funding for travel and
lodging is available. Organizing Committee: Dennis L. Harry, Colorado
