Research is challenged by the relatively short time period of observation for which digital records are readily available. Historical data recorded on paper and other physical media when suitably converted into machine readable formats, extends the time period of Earth observation and research back many decades. For legacy seismic data to be made available to support Earth system science, compelling challenges must be addressed in handling, preserving, and creating and maintaining archives of digital renderings of this "dark" data. This workshop seeks to bring together stakeholders across organizations and scientific domains to discuss the science drivers and challenges facing community use of legacy seismic data. We actively encourage participation among users and maintainers of these data collections as well as experts in their usage and potential applications. We welcome contributions as they pertain to NSF 10 Big Ideas including climate change research, machine learning, and big data analytics. This workshop will clearly identify the scientific importance of securing these data as well as provide a clear statement and prioritization of community needs and interests. The workshop will be a mix of invited, contributed, and lightning talks; posters, and breakout session. We welcome contributions of 1-2 page science briefs on the topic to include in the workshop report. You do not have to attend to contribute. Interested in contributing a longer paper on the topic? ExaHyPE (exahype.eu) is an open source simulation engine to solve systems of hyperbolic equation systems. For the 2nd workshop, we again invite existing users and interested potential users alike to join us for four days. Users can try out the engine while some developers are around, i.e. they start the week with a problem given as PDE in mind and go home with a working first prototype built on top of ExaHyPE. ExaHyPE, among others, features implementations for the seismic wave equations, shallow water equation and compressible Navier-Stokes. Interactions between Magmatism, Tectonics, and Faulting in Rifts, Arcs, Ridges, Calderas, and Volcanic Fields View Session Details: https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm19/prelim.cgi/Session/72237 Abstract: Interactions between magmatism, tectonics, and faulting occur at different temporal and spatial scales, as they are observed from individual volcanoes to plate boundaries, during single eruptive events or over centuries. However, our current understanding is still limited due to a lack of integrated approaches. Field, geodetic, and modeling studies suggest that earthquakes can trigger volcanic eruptions and intrusions through static and dynamic stress transfer. Conversely, magmatic activity can generate earthquakes via stress changes in surrounding country rock. In rifting events, magmatic fluids can release tectonic stresses and also be influenced by pre-existing fracture zones. Finally, the combined effects of magmatic, gravitational, and tectonic stresses can trigger caldera and volcano flank collapse. We strongly encourage multidisciplinary studies integrating geodesy, structural geology, volcanology, geochemistry, seismology, stress analysis, and/or modeling (numerical and analogical) to decipher relationships between magmatic, tectonic, and faulting processes at different temporal and spatial scales. Recent community efforts include the Cascadia Initiative, the Eastern North American Margin Community Seismic Experiment, and the Alaska Amphibious Community Seismic Experiment, as well as numerous studies at GeoPRISMS focus sites and initiatives led internationally. Amphibious geophysical datasets must overcome unique complications while collecting observations and synthesizing analyses across coastlines to resolve complex tectonic phenomena otherwise obscured by land-sea boundaries. This session will showcase the latest science emerging from these recent amphibious experiments including, but not limited to, seismology, geodesy, and magnetotellurics as well as interdisciplinary collaborations and innovative methodologies/techniques. This session aims to connect a diverse cross-section of the geophysics community spanning a wide range of tectonic regions.
