Computational Scientist position to manage the scientific computing laboratory at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism, Carnegie Institution for Science
The Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM) is looking to hire a highly qualified and motivated computational scientist to manage the Department’s scientific computing laboratory. The laboratory provides computational support through high performance computing and visualization with a focus on fluid dynamics. The computational scientist will primarily support the computational research efforts in core, mantle and lithosphere dynamics of staff scientists Peter Driscoll and Peter van Keken, but may also work with departmental postdocs and other staff. The support work will include development, optimization, and implementation of existing codes, integration of new community codes, improvements in job handling (including processing on large scale parallel clusters and cloud computing), documentation, and training of new users.
Applicants should preferably have a PhD in the natural or computational sciences with experience in fluid dynamical modeling. Fluency in Fortran, C++, OpenMP and MPI is required. We expect the successful applicant to become experienced with PETSc, Fenics, finite element meshing and visualization software, as well as the software distributed through CIG (geodynamics.org <http://geodynamics.org/>).
The Carnegie Institution is an endowed, independent, nonprofit institution, which includes 6 separate scientific research departments. DTM (dtm.carnegiescience.edu <http://dtm.carnegiescience.edu/>) shares its campus in Upper Northwest DC with another Carnegie department, the Geophysical Laboratory. DTM research focuses on planetary and earth sciences with significant strengths in geophysics, geochemistry, and astronomy. Research personnel consist of 14 scientists and a significant number of postdoctoral appointees. Computational resources include the Memex cluster (jointly operated by the departments in the Carnegie Institution) and local resources that are supported by two system and network administrators.
Applications should be submitted online at https://jobs.carnegiescience.edu/jobs/dtm <https://jobs.carnegiescience.edu/jobs/dtm> and should include a curriculum vitae and a cover letter containing a statement of interest in the position as well as the names of at least three people who can be contacted for letters of reference. Submission details are available when you click on “Apply Now.” Review of the applications will begin on May 1, 2016 Please contact Peter van Keken and Peter Driscoll for any questions regarding this position by email at pvankeken at carnegiescience.edu <mailto:pvankeken at carnegiescience.edu> and pdriscoll at carnegiescience.edu <mailto:pdriscoll at carnegiescience.edu>. Carnegie Institution is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of gender, race/ethnicity, protected veteran status, disability, or other protected group status.
