The project aims at improving the imagery of earthquake ruptures acknowledging for 3D complexities in the Earth structure. The project will take advantage of in-house cutting-edge wave simulation programs and newly available high-resolution tomographic models to quantify (1) the bias of the classic 1D Earth structure approximation and (2) the potential of extended seismograms to improve the description of earthquake rupture (so called finite-fault source models). This is a 4 years position with the equivalent of 1 year to be spent abroad, over the course of the PhD, at one of the partner institutions (California Institute of Technology, USA and University of Liverpool, UK). The position will open in September 2017 and the student will be based at Géoazur laboratory. A master degree in Earth sciences or physics is preferred. Computing skills are highly appreciated. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory. The application should be addressed to Dr. Anthony Sladen (sladen -at- geoazur.unice.fr) and should include CV, names of references, motivation letter, including specific interests and prior experience in areas related to the project. Competition for scholarships is fierce, and successful applicants will likely have high undergraduate records. Applications will be considered until March 24th, 2017. A very competitive package of salary (salary of about 2500€/month) and employee benefits is offered, as well as privileged conditions of accommodation. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The post-doc will work with the Pl to develop and use computational mantle convection models to explore the dynamics of the Earth's interior. The research program includes projects working on constraining large scale structures in the Earth's deep interior, such as the dynamical effect of the large low shear velocity provinces, and examining the effect of these features on the dynamics of a hotter early Earth. The post-doc will work on one or more of these research directions. The post-doc will also have the opportunity to develop their own parallel research track, ideally but not necessarily related to one of the research themes described. Applicants should apply online at: http://ukjobs.uky.edu/postings/135230. Applications must include a current CV and a research statement (upload as Specific Request 1). Please also provide the names and contact information for three references when prompted in the application. This information may be used to solicit recommendation letters from your references within the employment system. Review of applications will begin on March 15, 2017 and will continue until the position is filled. For more information about this position, email Dr. Keely O'Farrell (k.ofarrell at uky.edu).
