One PhD project (3 years + 1 year abroad) is available at University Côte
d'Azur, Nice area in France, under the national label « Initiative of
Excellence » UCA-JEDI. The project aims at improving the imagery of
earthquake ruptures acknowledging for 3D complexities in the Earth
structure. The project will take advantage of in-house cutting-edge wave
simulation programs and newly available high-resolution tomographic models
to quantify (1) the bias of the classic 1D Earth structure approximation
and (2) the potential of extended seismograms to improve the description of
earthquake rupture (so called finite-fault source models). This is a 4
years position with the equivalent of 1 year to be spent abroad, over the
course of the PhD, at one of the partner institutions (California Institute
of Technology, USA and University of Liverpool, UK). The position will open
in September 2017 and the student will be based at Géoazur laboratory.

A master degree in Earth sciences or physics is preferred. Computing skills
are highly appreciated. Proficiency in written and spoken English is
mandatory.

The application should be addressed to Dr. Anthony Sladen (sladen -at-
geoazur.unice.fr) and should include CV, names of references, motivation
letter, including specific interests and prior experience in areas related
to the project. Competition for scholarships is fierce, and successful
applicants will likely have high undergraduate records. Applications will
be considered until March 24th, 2017. A very competitive package of salary
(salary of about 2500€/month) and employee benefits is offered, as well as
privileged conditions of accommodation.
