Perhaps you are running out of memory?  You are only using 2
processors.  I generally use 128.  Can you add the statement

  printf("memory check %x %x\n",self->info.topo_data.heights,fp);

in the line after you open "ascii_topo" in SurfaceAdaptor.c.
