In my experience, SuperLU_dist is consistently quite a bit slower than
MUMPS, but you could easily test this for yourself. I have not used it
with GALE, only with my own codes. I do not think that the
-mat_superlu_icntl parameter that you've set will do anything - that
syntax is specific to the Petsc MUMPS interface. If you run with
--log_summary, Petsc should provide you with a list of the options
that you provided that had no effect when the program exits.
