UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD --- DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Modeling of Magma Dynamics Forced by Glacial Cycles
Grade 7: GBP 29,249 -- 35,938 per annum
Fixed Term 36 months

The Department seeks to appoint a postdoctoral research assistant in theoretical/computational modelling of coupled magma dynamics for a period of up to three years. The successful applicant will join the FoaLab -- http://foalab.earth.ox.ac.uk/ -- under the supervision of Dr. Richard Katz. The PDRA will investigate the coupling between glacial cycles, oscillations in sea level, and magmatism at mid-ocean ridges.

Candidates must have a PhD in Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related discipline, or have a Bachelors/Masters and be close to completion of their PhD. Applications will be accepted from candidates who expect to obtain their doctorate before 1 June 2013. The post will involve the development and analysis of mathematical models of magma/mantle dynamics and geochemical transport that are forced by imposed variations of sea level. Current, relevant experience of PDE-based numerical modelling is among the essential qualifications.

The successful applicant will have an option to engage in teaching. This may include lectures and small-group teaching of undergraduates and graduate students. There is also scope for the PDRA to supervise Masters projects.

The post is funded by the European Research Council and is based in the Department of Earth Sciences, Oxford. It provides ample funding for equipment and conference travel.

Applications for this vacancy are to be made online. Visit http://bit.ly/R0XtTD for further information.

Applications must be received by midday on Thursday 1st November 2012.

Committed to equality and valuing diversity.
