[CIG-SEISMO] specfem3D_globe compiler choice

Hello,

I'm trying to install the latest version of specfem3D_globe, and I'm having
the worst time finding the proper set of compiler flags to use. When I run
"make solver" I get the same Invalid character error as in this thread:
http://lists.geodynamics.org/pipermail/cig-seismo/2016-June/001058.html. My
understanding is that configuring with the right compilers should fix the
issue, but I can't seem to find a good combination. I'd previously used
mpif90 for FC and MPIFC, but no luck with either gfortran (from gcc 4.8.4)
or mpifort (from openmpi 1.8.8).

What are the compatible versions of these compilers? Do I need to worry
about any other flags when I'm configuring this latest version of specfem?
