[CIG-SHORT] Adaptive TimeStep for the quasi-static earthquake cycles simulation

Hello, everyone
I want to add some code to implement adaptive TimeStep for the quasi-static
earthquake cycles simulation. I want the time step size is calculated based
on the slip rate. From the mail list, I know there is a hook for doing
this. But I do not know where is the hook and how can I add my code?
Another question is, after I add the code, do I have to compile the entire
program every time?
Hope someone would like to give me some suggestions.
