It seems to me that what is needed is a visualization postprocessor that for
every node of the mesh simply outputs the "depth average" temperature. This
would just produce a temperature field that is constant for every depth. One
could then, in paraview or visit, plot the difference between the temperature
and the depth average temperature.
This should be fairly trivial to implement as a visualization postprocessor.
