It is a specific material model to exactly reproduce the benchmark
(that also won't work without modifications to ASPECT, see below).

That depends a lot on what you want to do.

This is still in development and not quite ready yet. The goal is to
exactly reproduce known approximations (ALA, TALA, EBA) schemes.

No, it just adds the shear heating term, see eqn 3 in the manual.

In general, adiabatic conditions and initial conditions are completely
independent.
