[aspect-devel] subduction and magmatism

Hi Nikola,

Thanks for your message. As you pointed out, Glerum et al. 2017 and the ASPECT manual have a good amount of documentation on lithospheric deformation without ‘magmatism’. Juliane Dannberg also recently added a new cookbook on mid-ocean ridge magmatism, although this does not include visco-plalstic behavior.

Assuming you are referring to a two-phase flow formulation with respect to magmatism, at some point in the next few months (tentative date, no guarantees) there will be a material model released that models visco-plastic (or viscoelastic-plastic) deformation in the presence of a fluid (volatile, magma, etc).

The material model approach follows that of Keller et al. (2013) <https://academic.oup.com/gji/article/195/3/1406/2874184> and the preliminary results are promising. However, we need to do a good deal more testing and documentation before it is ‘added’ (e.g., officially supported) in the repository.

Theoretically, this is the material model one would use to model magmatism and lithospheric deformation during subduction, although some (or lots) of modification may be required for your specific problem. However, I will note that we have not yet tried a subduction model with two-phase flow. Our most ‘realistic’ test case to-date was an extending continental lithosphere with asthenospheric melting.

So, the short answer is this type of functionality is in the pipeline and we hope to release it before the end of the year. Sorry to not be more specific … it’s difficult to project when something like this will be ready for release.

Depending on the specific question you want to address, you may also want to checkout the code TerraFERMA <http://terraferma.github.io/> which has been used to model fluid migration in subduction papers (see papers by Cian Wilson et al.). You are likely familiar with this work, but Taras Gerya has also done a number of studies on fluid transport in subduction zones.

I hope this is helpful and definitely let us know if you have any further questions!

Cheers,
John Naliboff

I am aware that this code is primarily developed for simulating convection. However, I have found and successfully used some plugins developed for this code, namely subduction plugin by Anne Glerum, as well as viscoplastic plugin.

In Dannberg and Heister (2016) the melting is associated with a plume. In Glerum et al (2017) subduction is modeled mechanically, there is no associated magmatism.
