Ignore this point: too much diffusion leads to more diffusion of heat from the 
CMB into the mid-mantle, and more diffusion of heat from the mid-mantle to the 
surface. But because the surface are is so much larger than the CMB area, the 
latter former wins and lowers the temperature in the interior.
