Dear Colleagues,

We would like to bring to your attention the following AGU sessions organized by CIG Scientists:

Behaviour of the lower crust and the brittle-ductile transition in continental deformation

Session ID#: 3498 (https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm14/webprogrampreliminary/Session3498.html)

Description:
The rheology of the lower crust is a key factor which controls the distribution and style of crustal deformation and links surface deformation with mantle dynamics. The transition from brittle upper crust to ductile lower crust is thought to occur at the crust’s strength maximum but the nature of this transition and its temporal and lateral variations are not well understood. Uncertainties include the effects of lithology, strain localization, changing strain rates (e.g., seismic or other cycles), strain softening/hardening, partial melt, role(s) of aqueous fluids, and pre-existing structure. There are also questions about how to incorporate complex lower crustal rheologies in numerical models of lithosphere deformation. We welcome contributions that address deformation of the lower crust and the brittle-ductile transition, including experimental and field studies of deformation mechanisms, geophysical observations of deformation rates and distribution, and geodynamic models that investigate the role of the lower crust in large-scale tectonics.

Invited presenters:
John Platt (University of Southern California)
Laurent Montesi (University of Maryland)
Mong-Han Huang (University of California, Berkeley)

Conveners:
Jolante van Wijk (New Mexico Tech), Claire Currie (University of Alberta), Gary Axen (New Mexico Tech)

This year's AGU Fall Meeting, in San Francisco, will be held 15-19 December. The abstract submission deadline is 06 August, 11:59 pm EDT. Please note, the abstract submission tool is NEW this year.
