We would like to bring your attention to the AGU session titled "S019: Seismic modeling and inversion: new ideas in waveform inversion in exploration and global seismology".

This session aims to bring together scientists in both academia and industry focusing on the key challenges in full-waveform inversion (FWI) and imaging.

Confirmed invited speakers include: Prof Barbara Romanowicz from Berkeley and Prof. Jeroen Tromp from Princeton. 

This year's AGU Fall Meeting will be held in in San Francisco on 14 to 18 December, 2015. The abstract submission deadline is  5 August 2015, 11:59 P.M. EDT.

Session Description: The goal of the full-waveform inversion (FWI) is to find a model that can explain every wiggle in the seismograms. Are we there yet? Many FWI schemes rely on perturbation approach in which the data residual is expanded as an infinite series of model-parameter changes and the linear term (Frechet derivative) is used in the inversion. The FWI critically depends on the choice of the starting model and the FWI iteration process may stop at local minima or may never converge. We welcome new ideas from both academia and industry to address some of these key challenges: in particular along but not limited to the following lines using theoretical & practical and blind-test examples:
* Can we formulate better FWI? Do we must use perturbation approach?
* Are there better strategies for initial model building & faster convergence?
* Do we need low-frequency seismic source to recover low-wavenumber medium parameter variations?
