Research Position in Ground-Motion Characterization at the U.S.
Geological Survey

The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Science Center (ESC) in Menlo
Park, California, is hiring a Research Geophysicist to study the
excitation and propagation of seismic waves with a focus on earthquake
ground motion to provide more quantitative estimates and basic
understanding of earthquake source parameters. An area of particular
interest is how best to represent seismological theory in the heavily
empirical ground-motion prediction equations (GMPE) so commonly used in
engineering analyses and applications. This will be a permanent position
at the GS-13 level, with promotion potential to GS-15.

This position focuses on developing better knowledge and understanding
of the excitation and propagation of seismic waves for use in
earthquake-resistant design and construction: buildings that are
designed and constructed to accommodate probable ground motions are the
nation’s primary defense against loss of life and property due to
earthquakes. The person hired will apply a strong background in applied
mathematics, seismology, and geophysics to solve analytical and
numerical problems while maintaining relevance of this research to other
related seismological and geophysical interests. This research will make
significant contributions to a vigorous program of earthquake source
investigations and hazard assessments.

Applications (resume and responses to application questions) for this
vacancy must be received online via USAJOBS before midnight Eastern Time
on Friday, October 31, 2014. Resumes MUST adhere to the format
prescribed on USAJOBS, including full narrative descriptions of “Duties,
