Faculty Position in Geology or Geophysics at the University of Michigan
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of
Michigan anticipates an opening for a tenure-track assistant professor
in the areas of geology or geophysics for a university-year appointment
starting September 1, 2016. The Department intends to pursue additional
hires in this direction in future years, and we are particularly
interested in candidates whose strengths will complement existing
research programs within the Department.
*Geology:*We encourage applications from candidates whose research
interests encompass the origin, evolution, or dynamics of the
continents. The successful candidate will develop a strong field-based
research program, complemented by expertise in modern analytical
techniques or in numerical or analogue modeling. Candidates with an
interest in understanding continental evolution in deep geologic time
are particularly encouraged to apply.
*Geophysics:*We encourage applications from candidates who will develop
an observationally based research program using geophysical methods
(e.g. seismology, geodesy, or potential fields) to study the Earth at
the crustal or continental scale. We are particularly interested in
those applicants whose work is relevant to societal concerns including
natural hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanism, and associated hazards,
or environmental change to the hydrosphere or cryosphere.
The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent
research program and contribute to both undergraduate and graduate
teaching. Applicants must have a Ph.D. at the time of appointment, and
should submit a CV, statement of current and future research plans,
statement of teaching philosophy and experience, evidence of teaching
excellence (if any), and names and contact information of at least four
persons who can provide letters of recommendation.
Information about the Department and instructions for submitting an
application can be found at www.lsa.umich.edu/earth.

The application deadline is September 15, 2015 for full consideration,
but applications will continue to be reviewed until the position is
filled. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply. The University
