The Stokes equations and heat equation are still coupled.  The
hydrostatic term just subtracts out a static component.  Regardless of
the parameters you choose for the hydrostatic term, you will get the
same simulation (up to numerical issues).  However, it is those purely
numerical issues that make it necessary to have a decent choice for
the hydrostatic term.
