The only significant difference between the distributions for these
applications will be whether they package Petsc or not.  Debian
packages it, and Ubuntu uses Debian's package.  For the others, you
will have to compile Petsc yourself.  If you are not familiar with
Linux, I would recommend Ubuntu.
