ELSI Summer School: Computational Tools for Planetary Formation and Earth Evolution

The 2014 ELSI Summer School will be held August 2nd and 3rd in the ELSI building on the Tokyo Tech campus to provide hands-on tutorials of computational tools related to planetary formation and early Earth evolution.

There will be tutorials hosted by the Computational Infrastructure for Geodynamics (CIG,www.geodynamics.org) led by Hiroaki Matsui [Calypso] and Eric Heien [Aspect]. Additional tutorials by Tarje Nissen-Meyer [AxiSEM], Takayuki Saitoh [SPH], and Koichiro Umemoto [Quantum-ESPRESSO: First-Principles Molecular Dynamics] will also be available. The morning of August 2nd the tutorial leaders will discuss the theoretical grounding of their respective codes followed by the first hands-on tutorial session during the afternoon. The second tutorial session will take place the morning of August 3rd. The goal for each 3-hour tutorial is that participants get the code working on their laptop, run test cases that demonstrate how to use the parameter files, and run cases that demonstrate the code’s usefulness for each participant’s desired scientific inquiry. Although participants will choose two tutorials, they will go home with the codes and instructional materials for all of the tu!
torials offered. After each tutorial we will briefly gather and share our results. After lunch on Sunday, participants who will be attending the SEDI meeting will be transported to Shonan Village.

There is no registration fee and ELSI is providing lodging at the Ours Inn in Oimachi for all participants for the nights of August 1st and 2nd. Note: ANA offers a big discount (often 1/2 price) airfare for non-Japanese residents traveling within Japan. This could be very useful for those traveling between the AOGS meeting in Sapporo to the Tokyo area for the ELSI Summer School and/or the SEDI meeting. ELSI will provide a bus to shuttle participants from Tokyo Tech to the SEDI location in Shonan Village on the afternoon of August 3rd.
