Hi all,
there is a post-doc position available soon in Utrecht, which will possibly involve the use of ASPECT.
Best,
Cedric.

3-year Post-Doc project:
Numerical modeling of the causes and consequences of intra-oceanic subduction initiation

Project description
A 3-year Post-Doc project is available at Utrecht University, the Netherlands, in the field of computational geodynamics. The main research topic is the numerical modeling of the driving mechanisms of intra-oceanic subduction initiation.
Geological, geochemical, and 2D numerical modeling results have shown that there are two weakness zones within ocean basins along which subduction zones may initiate due to far-field stress changes: mid-ocean ridges or structures parallel to those, and transform faults-fracture zones. The first aim of this project is testing the interplay between these weakness zones in various 3D subduction initiation settings. The second aim of the project focuses on identifying the possible causes that may create the far-field stresses that lead to subduction initiation.
The position is funded through an ERC Starting Grant, and work will take place in a research team around Dr. Douwe van Hinsbergen, Prof. Wim Spakman, and a new staff member in computational geodynamics that will soon be appointed. The research team comprises experts in geology, plate kinematics, and geodynamics. On the one hand our group builds quantitative plate reconstructions of subduction margins, and on the other hand we develop 3D numerical modeling codes and apply these to complex geodynamic problems and modeling of natural laboratories. The Utrecht team is vibrant and works with and develops the geodynamics codes Aspect and Elephant, which are integrated with Gplates plate reconstruction software so as to link crust-mantle dynamics to geological reconstruction.
Qualifications
The successful candidate is motivated and ambitious, has a PhD in Earth Sciences with a strong background in numerical modeling and geodynamics. Requirements are a deep interest in plate tectonic and geodynamic problems, and a willingness to interact in a multidisciplinary geology-geophysics team. Code development abilities are a plus, but not a requirement.
The application deadline is May 1st, 2015. Interviews with selected candidates will be held in June 2015 and the project will start no later than September 1st, 2015.
For more information, and details on how to apply, contact Dr. Douwe J.J. van Hinsbergen (d.j.j.vanhinsbergen at uu.nl<mailto:d.j.j.vanhinsbergen at uu.nl>).
