If you see errors when configuring, compiling, or installing, this is an 
indication that something is not quite right. In most cases, you will not end 
up with a usable PyLith if you encounter errors at any point during the 
build.

Using Spatialdata with PyLith requires configuring Spatialdata with 
the --enable-pythia flag as indicated by Charles.
