TECHNICAL/SCIENTIFIC

  • What are outstanding technical issues (e.g., boundary conditions, time integration, grids, rheologies, etc.) in the fields of wave propagation and rupture?
  • What computational methodologies are optimal for the various problems/scales/model complexities (e.g., reservoir, basin, regional, global)?
  • What are optimal strategies for computational grid generation (2D, 3D, hexahedral, tetrahedral, mixed)? Should we define standard formats for geophysical Earth models?
  • How should we parameterize observations for waveform inversion methods (structure and source inversion)?
  • How should we quantify misfits between observations and synthetics?
  • How can we improve the calculation and visualization of model uncertainties for waveform inversion?
  • Under what experimental conditions (local, regional, global, station density vs. number of events, event distribution, prior information, etc) is waveform inversion useful?
  • How should classical methods (e.g., ray-based tomography) be combined with 3D simulations?
  • What are major scientific problems that will most likely benefit from 3D wave simulation/inversion technology?

ORGANIZATIONAL

  • How can we coordinate developments in computational seismology on an international scale (working group, joint projects, www page, workshops etc)?
  • How can we collect, pool, and maintain software/tools efficiently?
  • What aspects need international cooperation (e.g., data and model formats, joint storage of observations and synthetics etc.)
  • What is necessary to facilitate the use of 3D simulation software for modelling/inversion studies particularly for observational Earth scientists?
  • Should forward and inverse modelling benchmarks be coordinated?
  • Should we team up with other scientific communities?
  • Does our community have sufficient computational resources?
  • Can we define some grand challenge problems in seismology?
