2019 Crustal Deformation Modeling Workshop

2019 Crustal Deformation Modeling Workshop Agenda

Agenda for the June 10-14, 2019, Crustal Deformation Modeling Tutorials and Workshop

Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO

Presentation Slides and Videos

Slides and videos for Mon-Tue tutorials

Slides for Wed-Fri science presentations

Tutorials

About 60% of the time will be devoted to tutorial lectures with instructors providing background information and running examples. The other 40% of the time will be devoted to "tinker time" during which participants can run the examples at their own pace, develop their own simulations, and get help from the instructors.

A description of the software tools and general workflow used in crustal deformation modeling is available in the Short-Term Crustal Dynamics Work Area under General Information. Tutorials will cover the use of PyLithCUBIT/Trelis, and ParaView. There will also be discussion of some other modeling tools during the Science Talks.

Beginner Tutorials

Beginner tutorials for PyLith and CUBIT/Trelis will not be offered at the workshop. Beginner users should work through the extensive set of examples in the PyLith manual and online tutorial.

WEDNESDAY JUNE, 5, 2:30PM PDT: PYLITH, CUBIT/TRELIS, AND PARAVIEW HELP SESSION

Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/121381451

This online help session is intended to answer questions from users and resolve problems encountered during installation or running simple examples. The format will be an interactive Q&A session.

Monday - Intermediate Tutorials

These tutorials will provide a discussion of intermediate PyLith/CUBIT topics. Prior to the workshop users should have installed the software and worked through the examples provided in the PyLith manuals.

  • What is the simplest CRM that would be useful, i.e., what is a good target for an initial release that would be useful to the community?
  • What are the priorities for adding more complexity beyond an initial release?
  • A query tool is also being developed to make the SCEC Community Fault Model (CFM) easier to use. What file formats do deformation modelers prefer for fault surfaces? Any requests for future updates to this tool?
